Enduring Appeal of the Prada Galleria Saffiano Lux
Over the past five years, it seems like every mid to low-range designer has released their own version of a saffiano leather tote or satchel. Walk into any TJ Maxx or Marshall’s and you’re sure to find variations by Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Calvin Klein, or Kate Spade. But let’s rewind a bit and remember who did it first and continues to do it best - Prada.
About 10 years ago, Prada’s saffiano leather was revolutionary. The structured leather easily holds its shape and creates crisp lines ideal for a work satchel or tote. It’s also a leather that holds color beautifully. Some of the brightest, richest hues you’ve ever seen. There are several variations by Prada, but by far the most popular remains the Galleria Lux double zip tote. Its’ dual handles fold down for a slim profile. A detachable, adjustable shoulder strap makes it both practical and comfortable. The saffiano leather is durable, nearly scratch-proof, waterproof, snow proof, basically the ultimate bag for urban city dwellers, especially those of us who live in an extreme climate with high humid summer temps and frigid cold wet winters.
While the Galleria is no longer the “it bag” it once was, it’s still a staple in any professional woman’s wardrobe. (Channel your inner Olivia Pope and you’ll know the power of this sleek bag). I love that I can carry it to work, while battling for a space on the subway, or wear it casually on a weekend stroll. The mini size, pictured here, is ideal for both settings. Not too big to seem overwhelming for a weekend casual outing, small enough to carry to dinner, lightweight and hands-free for running errands, and still holds a ton of stuff - a compact wallet, sunglasses, cosmetics, kleenex, keys, transit pass, a foldable shopping bag, and an iPhone 7 Plus
The Galleria double zip tote features an open interior compartment, two zipped compartments, a zipped interior pocket, and a flat open slot for small bills or cards. It’s easy to keep valuables concealed and have easy access to quickly grab items from the open center compartment. Prada releases the bag in a variety of colors each year, and often resurrects old favorite hues from time to time. But the good news is you can also find this bag on consignment often for very reasonable prices well below retail. I’ve included a few links below to some consignment finds currently available. Happy hunting! You can’t go wrong with this classic bag.
